Garifuna performing arts is an important part of Garifuna culture ceremony, storytelling, and celebration, mourning, coming together and telling of events in Garifuna people’s lives, both past and present.
Traditional Garifuna dance include the fundamental Garifuna Rhythms: Punta, Paranda, Hüngühüngü, Gunchei, Sambai, Wanaragua, and Chumba, which have transmitted the beliefs that have guided the life of the Garifuna for generations.
Garifuna performance draws on and embraces a full range of dramatic styles and forms including street theatre, improvisation, readings, ceremony, dance performance, dramatic performance and festivals.
