in Nicaragua
History
Joseph Sambola from Sangrelaya, Honduras, was the first Garifuna to arrive to Pearl Lagoon, Nicaragua, on the Caribbean Coast. He founded the first official Garifuna Community of San Vicente on the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua in 1880 in honor of their Ancestral Homeland.
Garifuna Day in Nicaragua
Garifuna Day in Nicaragua was established by decree number N°. 37-2006, approved on June 15, 2006, and Published in La Gaceta Official Journal No. 122 of June 23, 2006. It Declared November 19 of each year, "National Garifuna Day", so that the expression and preservation of the language, art, culture, and values of the Garifuna people of Nicaragua may be disseminated among Nicaraguans.
National Day of Garifuna Culture in Nicaragua
On October 29, 2014, the National Assembly of Nicaragua promulgated Law 886 or "Law of Declaration of Garifuna Culture as Intangible Heritage of the Nation", which was published in the Official Gazette, La Gaceta No. 215 of November 12 of the same year. In this Law, November 19 was declared as "National Day of Garifuna Culture".
