Garifunas began migrating to New York City in the 1930s as merchant marines in search of a better life. New York City is home to the largest Garifuna population outside of Central America, with over 250,000.

Over half of the population resides in The South Bronx. This is a tight-knit, vibrant, unique community that can’t be experienced in mass anywhere else in the world aside from Central America. Visitors to NYC can experience this culture first-hand.
